Equal Access for All

The Charter of Rights and Freedoms states that equality must exist for all, regardless of physical or mental disability.  In terms of sending literate children out into the world, we as educators have a responsibility to help them reach their potential and become the best writer, in this instance, that they have within them.  There are so many technologies available in today’s high tech world; knowing about them and utilizing them can open up a whole new world for them, just as it has for me.

Who might be interested in using assistive technology?  While assistive technology might not be for everyone, it really can be life changing for some. Certain children might not take to technology, but we will not know unless we try. Technology, in general, is such a part of most children’s lives, whether or not they are having access to it at home.  It is cool, it is hip, and walking around with certain pieces of tech (an iPod Touch, for instance) is a status symbol.  I never would have imagined that a tool to assist in writing might be considered a status symbol.  As Barb would say, “How great is that?”  It is great!  I will delve into the who and the how later on...
